Why Overshot?
"Overshot is not only a most versatile weave structure (appropriate for table linens, blankets, clothing, and more), but overshot also allows great potential variation and complexity of design, Even better, overshot drafts are available in a wide range of sources, historical and modern."
The Best of Weaver’s: Overshot is Hot
This is an opportunity to explore the wide potential of the Overshot weave structure, on as few as four shafts.
What is an Intensive Study Group?
This is a "teacherless" workshop. We each have the opportunity to be the expert in our chosen area of study. There are mentors available if you need some help or direction. Please ask. For this workshop each participant will warp their loom using the Overshot draft of their choice.
What then?
This year’s intensive is going to be structured differently from previous years. Since the topic is treadling variations we will not be doing a round-robin workshop. You are to bring your loom threaded with an overshot draft. Draft and yarn are your choice. Please ensure that the sett will weave appropriately (some where between plain weave and twill). We will then explore the many variations of treadling, not only star or rose fashion, but the treadlings of other weave structures.
What material is needed?
The weaver may choose any yarn that would be appropriate to the weave draft. The weaver will also provide all materials need to weave samples on their loom.
Calculate your warp length by the length of a pattern repeat times the number of variations possible (20+ will be available), or by your ambitions and desire to explore.
What to expect?
We recognize, and also value, the camaraderie and social aspect of a workshop. And, we envision this to have great potential for experimentation and learning. Just think of the opportunity for three days of discussion and exploration with others of like mind.
When are drafts needed?
Printable draft sheets will be turned in by January 3, 2009, so that copies can be made and notebooks prepared. Each participant will receive one of these notebooks containing all the drafts submitted.
Extra’s: We are planning to have a few other looms available for samples. These will be "round- robin" looms. If you have an extra loom and are willing to warp it, please let me know so we can co-ordinate patterns.
