As your Guild President this year, I am issuing a President’s challenge. I am calling it:
The Guild Member Encounter: Make a Napkin Edition.
Ok, that is a silly name, but hopefully it grabbed your attention!
For this President’s challenge, I challenge you, as a member of our guild, to learn more about a fellow guild member, and make a napkin for that person. It is intended to be a fun concept…one guild member, one napkin. We are living in an ever increasingly divided world, and I want us to remember how much we have in common, to learn more about each other, and make something useful and beautiful for someone else.
To that end, I challenge you to secretly make a napkin and then present that napkin to the guild member at the December meeting. You will receive your special recipient’s name at the October meeting: you will have two months to make a napkin for your fellow guild member.
To participate, please fill out the electronic form below and we’ll take care of the rest. There is a version of the form in the newsletter that you can print and bring with you, and we will have forms at the September and October meetings that you can fill out. So many ways to participate! On that form you will find questions about yourself.
For example: your favorite color, astrological sign, most unusual pet, favorite winter activity, favorite holiday dessert. All these questions are intended to be low stress and fun. If there are any questions that you do not like, or that make you uncomfortable, please feel free to ignore them. This is intended to be fun.
So now you are wondering how filling out a form about yourself will help you learn about someone else. Ahh, that is the heart of this challenge. At the October meeting, you will randomly pick someone else’s form and then go home and create a napkin for that person. The challenge is to use something from the information on the form to create a napkin specially for that person.
Challenge requirements:
Finally, the nitty gritty details! There are just three requirements for this challenge.
- Create a napkin for your fellow guild member in whatever fiber art medium makes you happy and will produce a napkin that you might like to receive, and use. You may weave, knit, tat, crochet, sew, applique, or use hand-dye fabric (or use any other way that you can think of) to create a napkin. Please do not use wool or other animal fibers for the napkin. The finished size of the napkin should be a minimum of 10” square. If it is slightly smaller, no one is going to confiscate your hard work, but try not to make it too small.
- Use something from the questions on the form to influence your design. I have included a few obvious questions to help make this easier, but please use your imagination to design something that reflects the person you are making it for.
- Please make a commitment to bring the item, in person, to the December meeting. And make a commitment to attend the meeting to receive your item. Please also be prepared to introduce your fellow guild member and present your item to the lucky recipient. If you are uncomfortable with public speaking, please let me (Katzy) know, and I would be happy to make the presentation for you.
And finally, here is the form for you to fill out. I hope you have fun and enjoy the challenge!

(The online form is closed. The drawing will be October 4th at the guild meeting. You can fill out a form there until the drawing is done.)
